How many scoliosis surgeries per year
Purpose: Severe scoliosis is primarily managed with surgery. This cohort study describes the incidence of surgically treated scoliosis among Swedish youth and young adults, stratified by age, sex, scoliosis type, and surgical approach and identifies changes in incidence rate and hospital length of stay LOS , infections requiring re-surgery and mortality within 90 days.
Incidence was computed by comparing individuals with surgically treated scoliosis to the total at risk population. This is intended to be informative and to serve as an educational resource. Some of the statistics are controversial, and various scoliosis specialists have differing points of view.
However, all of the statistics and data come from published, peer-reviewed scientific articles. For additional information, we encourage you to obtain the full text of the article online, or from your local university or library. Scoliosis is the most common spinal deformity in school-age children. The total number of scoliosis cases in the United States is estimated to be greater than 4 million.
National Scoliosis Foundation. Each year, , office visits, , hospital visits, and 17, emergency room visits are made by children with scoliosis. Approximately 29, scoliosis surgeries are performed on adolescents every year in the United States. WJO Scoliosis in the adult has an impact that is similar to other common medical conditions including osteoarthritis, coronary artery disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Overall, the burden of scoliosis on health-related quality of life is severe relative to other common medical conditions. With the aging demographic profile of the US, the burden of adult scoliosis is increasing and has a significant impact on the health of our population.
We do not expect this increase to reflect a change in surveillance techniques. Rather, we postulate that surgeons were more likely to recommend surgery for scoliosis due to improvements in surgical techniques, better peri- and post-operative care, and reduced bleeding time and complications, even though we lack data to support this assumption. The decrease in LOS may reflect improvements in surgical techniques and post-operative care. This present nationwide study is the largest report focused on trends in the surgical management of individuals and adolescents with scoliosis diagnosed with various types of scoliosis and may serve as a basis for further studies.

Surgery damages psychological health. Many adults with untreated scoliosis are highly functioning. The conclusion is that most individuals with AIS and moderate curve size around maturity function well and lead an acceptable life in terms of work and family. Some patients with larger curves have pulmonary problems, but not to the extent that this affects the life span. This needs to be taken into account when discussing surgery.
