Unlike many men of letters, Clifton Fadiman thought of himself primarily as a guide to the wisdom of others. But as a guide, Fadiman had few equals: for over 60 years, the editor, essayist, anthologist, and broadcast personality led countless readers to myriad subjects. As an editor and judge for the Book-of-the-Month Club for over 50 years, he helped shape the reading choices of countless Americans.

He wrote for the Encyclopaedia Britannica as well as numerous magazines and compiled over two dozen anthologies on subjects ranging from mathematics to poetry to the pun.

On radio and television programs, most notably the radio quiz show Information, Please! He also became a consultant and contributor to the Encyclopaedia Britannica. For an entry on the history of children's literature, he learned to read Italian, Spanish, Swedish and Dutch in his mids he was already fluent in French and German. Indeed, children's literature remained a special love for Fadiman. In , he received the Dorothy C. McKenzie Award for his contributions to children's literature for his anthology, A World Treasury of Children's Literature, and other works.

He wrote informal essays for Holiday magazine for 10 years, abandoning the column when he discovered to his horror that he had written more essays than Charles Lamb. For one anthology of short stories, he wrote not only the introduction, but also 63 commentaries. In the early s, Fadiman, who once listed his avocations as wine and "the avoidance of exercise," co-authored the compendium The Joys of Wine with Sam Aaron.

Barzun considers Fadiman to be an "often unheralded, but powerful and important" influence on twentieth-century American letters. Fadiman's work on Information, Please! Fadiman once estimated that he had read over 25, books in his life, and he never stopped. Even after completely losing his sight in his early 90s, Fadiman continued to vet manuscripts for the Book of the Month Club.

His son, Kim, would make tapes of books for his father, who would dictate his impressions. And although he had to give up plans to edit personally the new edition of Mark Van Doren's World Poetry: An Anthology of Verse , he remained the volume's general editor.

In , a new book promised to point Americans toward enough literature to last them for decades. In The Lifetime Reading Plan , author Clifton Fadiman surveyed roughly celebrated literary works from antiquity to the modern age, providing brief essays on everything from Homer to Herman Melville to Aldous Huxley in hopes that readers would engage with them on their own.

He helped establish the Book-of-the-Month Club and served on its board for more than a half century. He was also a force in shaping Encyclopedia Britannica , served as book editor of the New Yorker, and moderated a game show, carried on radio and later TV, called Information, Please , in which an erudite panel of commentators fielded questions from audience members, who would win a set of the Britannica if they stumped the experts. Additionally, Fadiman worked in book publishing, as a magazine columnist, anthologist, and familiar essayist, his musings gathered in charming collections such as Party of One, Any Number Can Play , and Enter, Conversing.

But whatever his platform, Fadiman never lost sight of his first job as a teacher after graduating from Columbia University in Let it. The school is a far greater invention than the internal combustion engine. A good schoolmaster is a far more useful citizen than the average bank president, politician, or general, if only because what he transmits is what gives meaning to the life of the banker, the politician, the general.

We survive precisely as primitive man survived, that is, by force and cunning. But we live by ideas and faiths of which he had hardly a premonition. Thanks to the G. Bill, more Americans were going to college and being exposed to the humanities that Fadiman championed. The Reading Plan arrived shortly before John F. And radio and television, still relatively young media, seemed promising venues not only to entertain, but to educate. In this cultural moment, Fadiman imagined his audience. He was born in Brooklyn on May 15, His parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants.

Brooklyn is, or was, not a town, not a city, not a country. It was a world. Fadiman found the breadth and variety of Brooklyn stimulating. From an early age, books fed his mind too. I knew he was a great Norwegian dramatist, part of a world I was somehow moving toward.

In any case, the ethos that keeps a public together, and installs communality in the absence of community also generally contains a set of standards and expectations that allow members of that public to make judgements as to the value of the conduct and character of other members, or other publics.

Again, such expectations can be strong or weak, implicit or explicit. Publics of Free Software developers have strong expectations as to the conduct of their members which are rendered explicit in manifestos, constitutions and other textual products where values are directly spelled out.

Corporate brands prosper as long as the explicit value statements that they set for themselves are mirrored in the judgments that their stakeholders make as to their actual practice.

As such, they are able to confer value judgements on the conduct of their members as well as on the conduct of other actors. What is judged is generally not only or even primarily technical competence. Such non-technical judgments are even more important in publics that require less in terms of technical brilliance, like brand communities or publics of people devoted to a common erotic kink, where the conduct and virtue of individual members often becomes the main determinant of their standing in the eyes of others.

Generally, such judgments are conferred on individual members as reputation. As such, public reputation has a number of particular characteristics. First, as opposed to trust, reputation does not presuppose the intimacy of interaction. On the contrary, reputation can be conferred on strangers on the basis of limited public information about their behaviour and character. We do not need to know Jamie Oliver to know he is someone who can not only cook, but is also socially-engaged in virtuous ways.

Reputation is the form that social capital takes among strangers. Once again, the reputation of Jamie Oliver presumably depends on judgements as to his conduct and virtue performed by people who are meat-eaters as well as vegans. For Bourdieu , these mechanisms remained hidden and mysterious, to be reconstructed through minute empirical research. In many publics, at least those which use online media, they can be spelled out quite explicitly in the form of the algorithms that underpin value metrics used by, for example, publics of software developers.

Third, insofar as reputation builds not only on technical brilliance, but also on the comprehensive contribution that a member is able to give to the cause of a public, then his or her reputation represents an abstraction of the collective judgement as to the value of his or her overall contribution to the common pursuit to which the public is devoted. In this way, reputation is the abstract form that value takes in an economy of commons. Once a person has acquired a reputation, this can be realized in different ways.

First, in creative scenes, reputation is often directly monetized. It is the reputational status of an actor that largely determines the monetary value of his work. This is true for artists, musicians and DJs, as well as, increasingly, freelance knowledge workers and mobile corporate managers Currid, ; Martin, Second, reputation can be used as social capital.

Finally, reputation can enhance the enjoyment of participation. If are coneived of as a cool guy it is more fun to go to the Star Trek fair. However reputation is realized, the prospect of accumulating reputation constitutes a motivation for participation in productive publics. Whatever my other reasons for participating are, the fact I can acquire a reputation that I can subsequently enjoy in many different ways makes participation in productive publics quite compatible with classic notions of economic rationality.

In other words, if we think of productive consumption as happening in publics, we can also find a way to explain why people participate in such practices that is perfectly in line with established models of economic action.

The notion that productive publics in general are coordinated by a new kind of reputation economy is presently being consolidated by a wide range of empirical studies that analyze highly diverse practices. In addition, actual developments that point towards the objectification of reputation and the integration of such objectified measurements in a number of value decisions — on the micro as well as macro level — point towards the possibility that such a reputation economy is presently undergoing a process of rationalization.

For example, many recent qualitative studies point to how knowledge workers consistently cultivate an online reputation to enhance the monetary value of their work and further their careers more generally Hearn, ; Clegg, , and often use objective measurements of such reputational capital, like Klout status, in order to justify the fees that they charge Marwick, et al.

It seems reasonable to suggest that as productive consumption enters into a normal part of the life conduct of knowledge workers, and in particular for the younger generations of future knowledge workers who are now the most passionate self-branders on social media platforms Marwick and Boyd, , a reputation for excellence in such practices of productive consumption becomes part of the social capital that knowledge workers and others too, perhaps can deploy.

What is new is not that reputation per se becomes important to economic success. This mechanism has already been identified by sociologists like Weber , Parsons and Bourdieu Consequently, participation in such productive consumer publics becomes in part motivated by the ability to accumulate reputational capital that can be realized in other walks of life.

Until quite recently, the relation between consumption and ethics has been conceived in largely two ways. First there is the liberal view that suggests that consumers express their exogenous preferences, including ethical preferences, via their consumer choices.

The values actually expressed here are understood to originate from the private concerns of individuals. Second, there is the critical theory perspective, whereby consumption and consumer society is understood to be diametrically opposed to the very possibility of ethics. This is because, in a consumer society, the sense of communality necessary for ethics to thrive. But the phenomenon of consumer publics seems to indicate another possibility, in line with recent empirical research on ethical or socially responsible consumer practices Barnett et al.

Such a different conception of ethics also builds on a different conception of consumer practice. I think this operation is misleading for, principally, two reasons. First, from an economic point of view, the ways in which consumer practice adds value to capital are different from those traditionally associated with the ability of labour to create surplus value in the capitalist economy Arvidsson and Colleoni, Second, and more important for our purposes, the experience of productive consumption is different from that classically associated with labour.

Labour is thus a human productive activity that is alienated and commanded Arendt, 79; Sennett, But the productive activity of consumers is neither alienated nor is it commanded. Action is immediately related to ethics in the sense that, through it, human beings create a common world a polis that enables them to live together.

Consumers who come together in publics act together to form common horizon of values that, in turn, determine the direction of their passions and engagements. And those common value horizons, those ethoi , last as long as they are, in turn, able to involve and render passionate new and existing actors.

What is more, the ethics of consumer publics entails the coming together of a multitude of points of view, representing the multitude of orders of worth Stark, that prevail in contemporary society, and their fusion into one — however temporary — value construct that enable a value judgement to take place, however momentarily. In this way, networked consumer publics can potentially offer a new conception of value by means of which the worth of action might be judged.

Consumer publics are also political spaces, or at least they might represent the beginning of a new politics concerned with the direct management of common resources. Like the communities that Elinor Ostrom studied in her Governing the commons, publics involve participants in a series of engagements and deliberations — frequently highly conflicting — in which members build the norms, rules, institutions and organizational forms, including definition of ends and aims, that enable the public to keep operating productively and further the cause that it has in common.

Both the ethical and the political aspects of consumer publics are directly linked to the creation of economic wealth. The creation of wealth, whether this be a free computer operating system, a strong brand identity that can be capitalized on as financial equity, or social wealth in the form of the ability of a public like the US food movement to contribute to addressing social concerns or some combination of the three is also immediately political in the sense that the successful pursuit of such wealth presupposes the successful deliberative administration of a common production process.

Similarly, this process of wealth creation is impossible to separate from the ethical practice of creating common values that is what unites publics in the first place. Publics produce, deliberate and evaluate at the same time. They represent a new institutional form in which the spheres of economics, ethics and politics, tragically separated in the modernization process, come together in forms of public action Arendt, That is, publics might offer us a possible way of imagining both a new politicization of the economy and a new paradigm of value that is both ethical and economic at the same time.

Indeed, from the point of view of political economy, publics constitute a possible way of running an economy of commons. The value form that they articulate is highly compatible with an economy of commons in that economic value comes to depend directly on a diffuse perception of ethical virtue, or in other words, the economic value of a person or of a public itself comes to depend directly on how its overall contribution to the commons is evaluated by a multitude of actors that are affectively proximate to and have an interest in that commons.

Possibility is, of course, a key term here, because in their present state, consumer publics remain subsumed and dominated by a media system in which power is increasingly concentrated among a select handful of actors and in which large corporations maintain disproportionate communicative power Wu, This obviously limits the political and ethical potential of consumer publics. But the empirical phenomenon of consumer publics points towards a different kind of value, one which is closer to the vitalist tradition of Tarde and Simmel than to Marx.

Marxists have rightly criticized this tradition for its lack of attention to the ways in which value and its measure are politically constituted Lukacs, I would suggest that attention to precisely such a politics of measure is of key importance in our present context: the construction and design of a new public sphere, with new kinds of devices and spaces that can enable value to emerge in a new way is, I think, a key ingredient of a progressive politics that tries to unlock the economic, political and ethical potential of productive publics in ways that point beyond the crumbling neoliberal edifice.

In , Habermas suggested that since we no longer believe in the doctrine of natural law, or in legal positivism, jurisprudence could be opened up to processes of public deliberation. But, like Habermas, we sense that the setting of economic value could be opened up to wider forms of deliberation. I suggest that publics and the reputation economies that they enact can constitute a possible way of achieving this.

In business markets, one competitive alternative may be that the customer decides to make the product itself rather than purchase it.

Field value assessments also known by other names, such as value-in-use or cost-in-use studies are the most commonly used—and, we believe, the most accurate—method for building customer value models.

Field value assessments call for suppliers to gather data about their customers firsthand whenever possible. Although field value assessment—gathering data firsthand whenever possible—is the most common way to build customer value models, not all situations lend themselves to it. Indeed, in some cases, the only way to obtain information for a value model is to rely on customer perceptions.

The results of such assessments may not be as precise as those calculated from field value assessments; nonetheless, they can be quite effective. Consider a telecommunications company that used focus groups to gain a better understanding of the worth of an advanced intelligent network service called single-number reach. Single-number reach is designed for people who want callers to reach them easily, even if they are not at a single location or phone number during the course of a day.

Provided from a central office switch, the service allows a caller to seek the buyer of the service via a sequence of programmed telephone numbers. To determine the target market segment, the company conducted four focus groups with itinerant Generation X professionals, some of whom had six telephone numbers on their business cards.

At the beginning of each focus group, the moderator demonstrated the service using a specially arranged prototype and then asked focus-group participants to write down their first impressions of the service and how much they would be willing to pay for it per month. The participants then engaged in a discussion of the service, how they would most likely use it, and so on.

At the conclusion of the approximately hour-long discussion, the moderator asked the participants to write down their interest in the service using a ten-point scale and again, how much they would be willing to pay for it per month.

Although the company was interested in the actual monetary amounts given at the beginning and at the end, it was more interested in any pattern of differences between the amounts. An ominous pattern would be steep declines from the initial amounts to the ending amounts, indicating that the participants were initially intrigued with the service but, upon further consideration, concluded that it would not offer them much value.

No significant change between the initial amounts and ending amounts would be a preferable pattern, provided the specified amounts were sufficiently large.

The final pattern, considerable increases from the initial amounts to the ending amounts, would indicate that when the participants thought about the service, they recognized a greater potential value. That pattern would suggest the crucial role of business marketing communications in conveying the value of using the service to prospective customers.

Without a doubt, the most difficult customer value model that a supplier will build is its first one. Indeed, gaining a comprehensive understanding of the value of a market offering in a particular customer setting may appear monumentally difficult. But it can be done. The first step is putting together the right kind of value research team. The team should include people with product, field engineering, and marketing experience, and two or three forward-thinking salespeople.

Having salespeople involved at the start is particularly important. They know the customer and how the offering is used; they also know which customers might be willing to cooperate in value research. Sales-people who are part of a value assessment initiative from the outset are also more likely to understand and appreciate it.

They will, therefore, support the approach and can then persuasively relate their experiences to others in the sales force. Selecting the right market segment to target is the next step. Before approaching a customer, the team should think through what it will need from the customer and what the customer will gain, and be prepared to offer an incentive. For example, the supplier might offer to provide the resources to gather the data at no charge to the customer and guarantee to share all findings.

For most companies, the promise of shared research findings among participating customers in an aggregated or disguised manner is an irresistible incentive because it allows them to benchmark. Grainger, a major distributor of maintenance, repair, and operating supplies in North America, offered both incentives for the 15 companies that participated in its initial model-building effort. These elements may be technical, economic, service, or social in nature and will vary in their tangibility.

How well a pigment disperses in a coating, for example, would be a technical element; providing a consolidated monthly invoice rather than a separate invoice for each purchase would be an economic element; design assistance would fall under the service heading; and ease of doing business with the supplier would be social. As it is generating the list, the team should consider the entire life cycle of the offering in question, from how the customer acquires and uses it to how the customer disposes of it when it is no longer needed.

By identifying as many elements as possible, the team will be able to gauge more accurately the differences in functionality and performance its offering provides relative to the next best alternative.

But they tend to leave out cost elements, producing less valid estimates of worth. A bottle breaking in a filling line causes downtime, certainly, but it also generates costs in scrap, discards, disposal, maintenance labor, cleaning and sanitizing chemicals, and so on, many of which tend to be buried in various plant-overhead accounts. Believing that this was frequently the case, Alcoa Aerospace developed a program in which the company trained its salespeople in field-value-assessment methods and then gave them an assignment in which they had to comprehensively chart all the steps a customer took in acquiring, converting, and disposing of an Alcoa offering.

Interestingly, the program gave salespeople a reason to approach customers: to ask them to cooperate in letting them do their assignments. The promise of enhanced knowledge of their own businesses provided an incentive for those customers. At the end of a two-month period, the sales-people got together and presented their findings to one another.

With a comprehensive list of value elements in hand, the next step is obtaining initial estimates for each element and finding out what each one is worth in monetary terms.

To allay any concerns on the part of the employee, customer management should tell them that the person is there to help out and to learn. The customer may think the information does not exist.

In fact, the kind of data that needs to be pulled together in the analysis may reside on six or seven databases or systems in different functional areas. Sometimes, the only way to find the data is for team members to ask around until they come across the individual who knows where the information is. Focus groups made up of representatives from each functional area in a company can also be an effective mechanism for uncovering data.

The Proaction Group, a Chicago-based consulting and strategy implementation company, recently conducted four internal focus groups at a customer company for exactly that purpose. To prepare themselves and the prospective focus-group participants, Proaction consultants met individually with each prospective participant before the session, learning what the issues might be and gathering some initial data. During the session, participants were asked what kinds of information they thought should be used in a value model and then where in the organization to look for that information.

The value research team also needs to be creative in finding other sources of information. Independent industry consultants or knowledgeable personnel within the supplier company can be good sources of initial estimates. The ease with which the team can establish monetary estimates for its value elements will vary. The value of social elements such as greater peace of mind, for example, is generally very difficult to express in monetary terms.

In fact, most suppliers do not even attempt to assign monetary amounts to social elements. Instead, they put those elements aside and discuss them with the customer in a qualitative way after presenting quantitative results.

In any field value assessment, suppliers will find that some assumptions must be made in order to complete an analysis. It is critical for the supplier to be explicit about any assumptions it makes. After building the initial value model, the supplier should validate it by conducting additional assessments with other customers or potential customers in the market segment. In other words, the supplier should provide the initial estimate and ask the informants whether that element is more or less valuable to them than the estimate.

In conducting additional assessments, the supplier will also learn how the value its offerings provide varies across kinds of customers. The supplier can then build a database that contains value estimates—and the individual customer characteristics, which we call descriptors, that might affect those estimates—from all participating companies.

Looking at all of the data together, the supplier can then determine which descriptors have more impact than others on the value customers receive from the offering in question. As a result, the supplier can choose to pursue those customers and prospective customers for which its offering will provide superior value.

Suppliers can not only use value models to inform and guide their own decision making but also to create persuasive sales tools. One common sales tool is a value case history. Rather than selling customers the more commonly marketed corrugated-cardboard packaging materials, Sonoco offers packaging systems that, it maintains, are stronger, lighter, and smaller. Sonoco maintains a file of these case studies, which its salespeople draw on when making proposals to other prospects.

It is recommended to play with the remote control helicopter inside to reduce the chance of damaging your motor. The Cheerwing U12S brings the cool factor with a built-in camera to ensure you can never lose sight of your helicopter.

You can even save the video to show your friends later. You will have to charge the battery for 80 minutes to get minutes of flight time. You can choose from either their blue, red, or yellow models. The body frame is completely metal. The Gyroscopic balance bar allows for more stability with flight and taking photos. The metal frame and flexible blades allow it to survive any unexpected crashes it may endure. If you are a beginner, the out-of-range alarm will come in handy.

Never lose sight of your helicopter again! With the one key take-off and landing, you can easily operate your remote control helicopter. It has the added features of altitude mode and emergency stop.

The helicopter can go in both high and low speeds. You can even race your friends using frequency technology. With multicolored LED and flashing lights, you will have lots of fun flying this helicopter in the dark. The body of the helicopter is only available in blue.

Built with soft blades and a metal body, the helicopter is extremely durable. If it crashes to its side or upside down, there is no need to pick it up. It can take off right from that position. With a one-key lift-off and landing button and gyro technology, you can easily stabilize and control the helicopter. The trim control helps prevent any tilting and drifting. Fear not, each helicopter comes with its own remote control. Each helicopter gets about minutes of flight time after a minute charge.

It should be noted, the tank is not operated by remote control. The set is supplied with one green and one red helicopter. The tank has a cool Army camouflage look to it. In addition, both the helicopters and tank have colorful lights that flash. All the pieces to the set are very well built.

With just the press of a button, your helicopter can take off or land. Pressing down on the same button, you can enable an emergency stop if you think your chopper is in danger. Grab a toy tank set and your kiddo can have an all-out epic battle.

It will allow for extra flight time, instead of constantly waiting for the battery to charge. Different than other helicopters on our list, the JJRC comes with three rechargeable batteries. Each battery will give you about 6 minutes of flight time. It takes 50 minutes to fully charge each battery.

There are no color options with this model helicopter. However, the helicopter is very sleek with its blue and red color and front headlights. The JJRC helicopter comes with a crash resistance emergency stop. If you think you are about to crash, all you need to do is hold down the one key button.

The helicopter is perfect for beginners with its one key takeoff and landing. In addition, the helicopter comes with an altitude hold button. It will automatically reach a certain height when activated. The Syma Remote Control Helicopter is definitely the smallest on our list. Fitting in the palm of your hand, the pint-sized helicopter makes a fun toy for both children and adults, alike.

Despite its size, you can still operate the helicopter in various directions. With only 6 minutes of battery life, you might find yourself constantly charging it. The good news is, you only need to charge it for 40 minutes in order to achieve full battery life. Despite its size, it is made with incredibly hard material and is very lightweight. The metal body frame allows it to stabilize the helicopter while in flight. With a mainly black body, the helicopter is equipped with LED lights, in case you want to fly it in the dark.

The small chopper comes with one key takeoff and landing to allow for easy use. Setting the altitude hold, you can have the helicopter hover once it reaches a specific height. If you are looking for a flying light show, look no further. While it seems like it would easily break if dropped, it is made of durable ABS material to prevent breakage from a crash.

You and your child can go to a local park and fly this thing around for quite a long time before it needs to be charged. Lastly, there are built-in lights that flash, making it easy to see the helicopter on cloudy days or at night. The second to last RC helicopter to make the list is from HiStorm.

It is designed using gyroscope technology, making it easy to control. It is quite durable thanks to the metal body frame, which also increases stability. The controls on the remote are up, down, left, right, forward, and backward. It takes less than 45 minutes to charge this helicopter from a completely drained battery to fully charged.

Conveniently, it is charged via USB cable that will work on outlet cubes, tablets, and laptops. The controller is powered by AA batteries that are not included. If the helicopter crashes, the throttle will pick it right up and get it to take off again! There are multi-colored LED lights that make it easy to fly in the dark as well. It has an auto-hovering feature that makes it easy to stay in one place for an extended period of time. You only need to press one button in order to take off or land with this mini RC helicopter.

There is also a convenient emergency stop feature that will bring the toy down in the event that wind picks up or it starts to rain. There are two different speed modes and you can also pair it with another helicopter to fly with your friends or family members. There is a low battery power mode that will alarm you when the battery is getting low.

Now that you know about five of the best RC helicopters for kids, how do you know which one is best for your child? One of the most important aspects of a radio-controlled helicopter is the controls.

There are several types of controls and channels on RC helicopters , making it even more important to make sure you buy the right one. The more channels, the more tricks, and stunts that these things can do!

When it comes to choosing the remote control, you have a choice between infrared or radio remote controls. Infrared remotes have a smaller range, making them perfect for flying them inside or within a small yard. If the ability to do fun tricks at high speeds is important to you or your child, you may want to consider opting for a radio remote control.

Having one that is lightweight will make the impact less damaging to the helicopter as well as whatever it crashed into. Plus, they are much more budget-friendly. RC helicopters that are designed to be used by children will have smaller propellers that are usually made out of a lightweight material such as plastic.

When an RC helicopter is flown indoors, having one that is smaller will lessen the chance of your precious items becoming broken. Chances are, your child is more excited about flying the helicopter rather than putting it together. You may want to look for one that takes a shorter amount of time since your kid will want to get flying as soon as possible! If you do find one that takes a bit longer , you can have them help you put it together and teach them a new skill.

There are circumstances that make this step more complicated, but we will stick to simpler examples at this stage. Step 3 : Balance the oxygen atoms by adding H 2 O molecules on the side of the arrow where O atoms are needed. The first half-reaction needs seven oxygen atoms on the right, so we add seven H 2 O molecules. The second half-reaction needs one more oxygen atom on the left, so we add one H2O molecule. The electrons go on the side of the equation with the highest charge most positive or least negative.

We add enough electrons make the charge on that side of the equation equal to the charge on the other side of the equation. If we add two electrons to the right side, the sum of the charges on each side of the equation becomes zero. Although it is not necessary, you can check that you have added the correct number of electrons by looking to see whether the net change in oxidation number for each half-reaction is equal to the number of electrons gained or lost.

This would require six electrons, so we have added the correct number of electrons to the first half-reaction. Two electrons would be lost in this change, so we have added the correct number of electrons to the second half-reaction.

Step 6 : If the number of electrons lost in the oxidation half-reaction is not equal to the number of electrons gained in the reduction half-reaction, multiply one or both of the half- reactions by a number that will make the number of electrons gained equal to the number lost. For the chromium half-reaction to gain six electrons, the nitrogen half-reaction must lose six electrons.

Thus we multiply the coefficients in the nitrogen half-reaction by 3. The 3 H 2 O in the second half-reaction cancel three of the 7 H 2 O in the first half-reaction to yield 4 H 2 O on the right of the final equation. Step 8 : Check to make sure that the atoms and the charge balance. The process for balancing a redox reaction run in basic solution is very similar to the steps for balancing redox equations for acidic solutions. We first balance the equation as if it were in acidic solution, and then we make corrections for the fact that it is really in basic solution.

Tip-off — If you are asked to balance a redox equation and told that it takes place in a basic solution, you can use the following procedure. Steps : Begin by balancing the equation as if it were in acid solution. Otherwise, skip to Step Step 10 : Cancel or combine the H 2 O molecules.

Step 11 : Check to make sure that the atoms and the charge balance. If they do balance, you are done. If they do not balance, re-check your work in Steps Our equation is balanced correctly.

Balancing Redox Equations. Sample Study Sheet : Balancing Redox Equations Using the Oxidation Number Technique Tip-off — If you are asked to balance an equation and if you are not told whether the reaction is a redox reaction or not, you can use the following procedure. General Steps Step 1 : Try to balance the atoms in the equation by inspection, that is, by the standard technique for balancing non-redox equations.

Step 3 : Is the reaction redox? Sample Study Sheet : Balancing Redox Equations Run in Acidic Conditions Using the Half-reaction Technique Tip-off — If you are asked to balance a redox equation and told that it takes place in an acidic solution, you can use the following procedure.

General Steps Step 1 : Write the skeletons of the oxidation and reduction half-reactions. To do this, the Cr atom must lose four electrons. Let us start by listing the four electrons as products:. But where do the O atoms come from? When we balance this half reaction, we should feel free to include either of these species in the reaction to balance the elements.

Let us use H 2 O to balance the O atoms; we need to include four water molecules to balance the four O atoms in the products:. This balances the O atoms, but now introduces hydrogen to the reaction.

This half reaction is now balanced, using water molecules and parts of water molecules as reactants and products. Reduction reactions can be balanced in a similar fashion. When oxidation and reduction half reactions are individually balanced, they can be combined in the same fashion as before: by taking multiples of each half reaction as necessary to cancel all electrons.

We start by separating the oxidation and reduction processes so we can balance each half reaction separately. The oxidation reaction is as follows:. We add those two electrons to the product side:. Now we must balance the O atoms. If we check the atoms and the overall charge on both sides, we see that this reaction is balanced. Now we combine the two balanced half reactions.

The oxidation reaction has two electrons, while the reduction reaction has four. The least common multiple of these two numbers is four, so we multiply the oxidation reaction by 2 so that the electrons are balanced:. Combining these two equations results in the following equation:. The four electrons cancel. What remains is. Balance these redox reactions by the half reaction method. Balance these redox reactions that occur in aqueous solution. Use whatever water-derived species is necessary; there may be more than one correct balanced equation.

Explain why this chemical equation is not balanced and balance it if it can be balanced. Explain why this equation is not balanced and balance it if it can be balanced. The charges are not properly balanced. Previous Section. Table of Contents. Next Section. Learn to balance complex redox reactions by the half reaction method.

This is actually the case with most check engine codes. Occasionally, a sensor can fail outright, often by being poisoned by leaded gasoline not very common nowadays , or atmospheric chemicals.

Sensors have four fragile wires leading up to them, two for the signal to the computer, and two for a small heating element that helps them get up to their operating temperature more rapidly on a cold startup.

Wires that are broken, melted against the hot exhaust pipes, or corroded, will give erratic or missing readings. Any of these can cause one or more cylinders to misfire. The danger is that the extra fuel injected to compensate eventually winds up being burned in the catalytic converter. This is rapidly damaging. The computer can become confused about the readings. I hope the article above provides you with basic information about the O2 Sensors.

Have you changed an O2 sensor? What did you do about it? What do you think is the most important part of the process? Please feel free to comment below and join the conversation! Auto Saving Center. Mileage Log Subscription.

Interestingly, divers also use a very similar apparatus to measure the pressure of oxygen in their breathing gas. Most newer vehicles have two sensors, one on the exhaust pipe, close to the engine and another close to the muffler and catalytic converter. The O2 sensors in your car monitor the amount of oxygen in your exhaust system to confirm that the vehicle is running efficiently and that the catalytic converter is functioning properly.

The reading is turned into an electrical signal which is dispatched to the engine control computer. The computer adjusts the vehicle fuel metering and timing to maintain an optimum mixture. This refers to when a car is either idling or just cruising at a certain speed and performance is not the primary goal e. The sensors in older vehicles had a much shorter lifespan than modern cars. If your car was built before , your sensors may last about 90, kms.

It is located within the emissions control system. When functioning, the O2 sensor sends data to the management computer located within the engine. In your car, a functioning O2 sensor ensures that your engine is running at top performance.

Additionally, this sensor keeps your emissions in check and alerts you to when emissions are too excessive. For states that have vehicle inspection programs to regulate emissions, the use of the CEL and O2 light will alert officials to any excessive emissions. As a result, if one or more of your oxygen sensors is faulty during an emissions inspection for your car, you will most likely not pass the inspection. The actual number of oxygen sensors for a car depends on the year, make, model and engine.

However, most of the later model vehicles have four oxygen sensors. Note the following specific vehicles that have four oxygen sensors:. When a gasoline-powered engine burns gasoline there is oxygen present. Oxygen in an engine is the result of a number of factors including the air temperature, altitude, engine temperature, load on the engine, and barometric pressure.

Once all the nutrients have been absorbed, the waste is moved into the large intestine, or bowel. Water is removed and the waste faeces is stored in the rectum. It can then be passed out of the body through the anus. This page has been produced in consultation with and approved by:. The type of pain felt in the abdomen can vary greatly. Some of the more common and obscure minerals found in vitamins are also identified.

And the next video is an introduction to another category of vitamins, the fat soluble group such as vitamin E, D and K. The human diet should be well balanced to provide nutrients required for bodily function and the minerals and vitamins required for maintaining structure and regulation necessary for good health and reproductive capability Figure Explore this interactive United States Department of Agriculture website to learn more about each food group and the recommended daily amounts.

The organic molecules required for building cellular material and tissues must come from food. During digestion, digestible carbohydrates are ultimately broken down into glucose and used to provide energy within the cells of the body.

Complex carbohydrates, including polysaccharides, can be broken down into glucose through biochemical modification; however, humans do not produce the enzyme necessary to digest cellulose fiber. The intestinal flora in the human gut are able to extract some nutrition from these plant fibers.

These plant fibers are known as dietary fiber and are an important component of the diet. The excess sugars in the body are converted into glycogen and stored for later use in the liver and muscle tissue.

Glycogen stores are used to fuel prolonged exertions, such as long-distance running, and to provide energy during food shortage. Fats are stored under the skin of mammals for insulation and energy reserves. Proteins in food are broken down during digestion and the resulting amino acids are absorbed.

All of the proteins in the body must be formed from these amino-acid constituents; no proteins are obtained directly from food. Fats add flavor to food and promote a sense of satiety or fullness. Fatty foods are also significant sources of energy, and fatty acids are required for the construction of lipid membranes. Fats are also required in the diet to aid the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and the production of fat-soluble hormones. While the animal body can synthesize many of the molecules required for function from precursors, there are some nutrients that must be obtained from food.

These nutrients are termed essential nutrients, meaning they must be eaten, because the body cannot produce them. The fatty acids omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid and omega-6 linoleic acid are essential fatty acids needed to make some membrane phospholipids.

Vitamins are another class of essential organic molecules that are required in small quantities. Many of these assist enzymes in their function and, for this reason, are called coenzymes.

Absence or low levels of vitamins can have a dramatic effect on health. Minerals are another set of inorganic essential nutrients that must be obtained from food. Minerals perform many functions, from muscle and nerve function, to acting as enzyme cofactors. Certain amino acids also must be procured from food and cannot be synthesized by the body. The human body can synthesize only 11 of the 20 required amino acids; the rest must be obtained from food. With obesity at high rates in the United States, there is a public health focus on reducing obesity and associated health risks, which include diabetes, colon and breast cancer, and cardiovascular disease.

How does the food consumed contribute to obesity? Fatty foods are calorie-dense, meaning that they have more calories per unit mass than carbohydrates or proteins. One gram of carbohydrates has four calories, one gram of protein has four calories, and one gram of fat has nine calories. Animals tend to seek lipid-rich food for their higher energy content.

Excess carbohydrate is used by the liver to synthesize glycogen. When glycogen stores are full, additional glucose is converted into fatty acids. These fatty acids are stored in adipose tissue cells—the fat cells in the mammalian body whose primary role is to store fat for later use. The rate of obesity among children is rapidly rising in the United States.

The goal of this campaign is to educate parents and caregivers on providing healthy nutrition and encouraging active lifestyles in future generations. This program aims to involve the entire community, including parents, teachers, and healthcare providers to ensure that children have access to healthy foods—more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains—and consume fewer calories from processed foods. Another goal is to ensure that children get physical activity. With the increase in television viewing and stationary pursuits such as video games, sedentary lifestyles have become the norm.

Visit www. There are many organs that work together to digest food and absorb nutrients. The mouth is the point of ingestion and the location where both mechanical and chemical breakdown of food begins.

Saliva contains an enzyme called amylase that breaks down carbohydrates. The food bolus travels through the esophagus by peristaltic movements to the stomach.

The stomach has an extremely acidic environment. The enzyme pepsin digests protein in the stomach. Further digestion and absorption take place in the small intestine. The large intestine reabsorbs water from the undigested food and stores waste until elimination. Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are the primary components of food. Carbohydrates are the sugars, starches, and fiber found in many foods.

Carbohydrates are called simple or complex, depending on their chemical structure. Simple carbohydrates include sugars found naturally in foods such as fruits, vegetables, milk, and milk products, as well as sugars added during food processing.

Complex carbohydrates are starches and fiber found in whole-grain breads and cereals, starchy vegetables, and legumes. Foods such as meat, eggs, and beans consist of large molecules of protein that the body digests into smaller molecules called amino acids. The body absorbs amino acids through the small intestine into the blood, which then carries them throughout the body.

Fat molecules are a rich source of energy for the body and help the body absorb vitamins. Oils, such as corn, canola, olive, safflower, soybean, and sunflower, are examples of healthy fats. Butter, shortening, and snack foods are examples of less healthy fats.

Thanos making a bargain with Doctor Strange. Before Thanos could end Stark's life, however, Doctor Strange spoke out and promised that if Thanos agreed to spare Stark's life, then he would offer up the Time Stone in exchange. Strange promised that this would not be a trick, as Thanos turned the Infinity Gauntlet away from Stark and aimed it at Strange instead.

Despite Stark desperately begging him not to do it, Strange then used Magic to reveal the Stone's location. Thanos takes possession of the Time Stone. Having manifested the Time Stone into his hand, Strange regretfully considered his decision to go against his vow as one of the Masters of the Mystic Arts before he finally allowed it float towards Thanos, much to the horror of Stark.

Taking the stone, Thanos examined it for a moment and then inserted the stone into the gauntlet, giving him the power to control the very fabric of time itself. With the fifth stone in the Gauntlet, Thanos had only the Mind Stone left to collect before he finally had the power to complete his ultimate goal. Thanos departs Titan with five Infinity Stones. As Thanos basked in his victory, he was suddenly struck by multiple blaster shots, as Star-Lord had appeared out of nowhere and began furiously shooting at him with his Quad Blasters , still furious over the death of Gamora.

However, Thanos remained completely uninjured and simply conjured his portal using the Space Stone and departed from Titan , intending to go to Earth and collect the final Infinity Stone, leaving all of the heroes behind, feeling utterly defeated by him. Thanos finally stepping foot onto Wakanda. However, Thanos found himself confronted not only by the forces of Wakanda but also fractured teams of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Thanos stood alone and without fear, staring at his enemies, then began to calmly walk toward them. Thanos phases right through the Hulkbuster. Even with all of his army of Outriders now destroyed, Thanos with the nearly complete Infinity Gauntlet proved to be practically invincible and far too powerful for all of his opposers and he made short work of them.

As Bruce Banner charged at him in the Hulkbuster , Thanos did not slow his pace and simply made the Hulkbuster intangible and imprisoned it in solid stone. With more of the heroes charging at him, Thanos used the power of the stones to subdue them all.

Thanos easily crushes War Machine 's armor. With both Captain America and Black Panther charging towards him, Thanos used the Power Stone to send Captain America flying back, before grabbing ahold of Black Panther by the throat, punching him down to the ground. Thanos then proceeded to blast Falcon out of the air before War Machine unloaded his entire arsenal upon him. However, Thanos remained unaffected as he simply blocked all the shots and crushed the Mark IV Armor , before tossing it aside.

Thanos stopping Okoye 's Vibranium Spear. As Thanos continued to make his way towards the Mind Stone, the Winter Soldier and Okoye did whatever they could to bring him down, as Thanos shrugged off the bullets and stopped the Vibranium Spear and knocked them both backward with a shock wave, before trapping Black Widow under rocks ripped from the ground.

With the Stone near, Thanos saw that Wanda Maximoff was attempting to use her powers to destroy it, which meant that Vision would also die. Thanos being held back by Captain America. With little left between Thanos and the Stone, Groot tried to trap him with his vines, but Thanos simply tore these apart. With only Captain America left, he furiously took on Thanos alone, striking him with the Wakandan Shields.

Tiring of this fight, Thanos tried to push Captain America down with the Gauntlet, as he was impressed by Captain America's strength and ability to stop the force of the gauntlet, before knocking him down with a brutal punch to the ground. Thanos is struck by Wanda Maximoff 's powers.

Finally, Thanos reached the Stone, as Maximoff then unleashed a blast of energy to try and hold him back while she continued trying to destroy the Stone to keep Thanos from completing his goal.

Thanos found that Maximoff's power, which also came from the Infinity Stones , harder to get through, as he pushed with all his might to get to her. However, Thanos was too late as Maximoff overloaded the Stone, causing it as well as Vision to be destroyed. Thanos attempts to comfort the Wanda Maximoff. Upon seeing the Mind Stone 's destruction, Thanos did not react with any rage or sadness at the girl who had seemingly hindered his ultimate goal.

Instead, he sympathized with her tearful sacrifice of Vision to destroy the Mind Stone, seeing the same pain which he had felt as he sacrificed Gamora to obtain the Soul Stone. Maximoff then insisted that Thanos could never understand her pain, to which Thanos had claimed to have lost more than she could ever know.

Thanos uses the Time Stone to revive Vision. Thanos then claimed that he did not have any time to mourn, noting that there was no time at all. To the horror of Maximoff, Thanos then activated the Time Stone and aimed the gauntlet at Vision's remains, restoring all the pieces of Vision's shattered vibranium body and returning him into life, along with the Mind Stone. Upon seeing this, Maximoff screamed out in horror and attempted to stop him, only for Thanos to knock her out with a brutally heavy strike.

Thanos takes the Mind Stone from Vision. Now with a greater advantage, Thanos wrapped the Infinity Gauntlet around Vision's throat and proceeded to lift him in the air. Looking Vision straight in the eye, Thanos crushed his vibranium skull with little effort, forcefully ripping the Mind Stone out from Vision's head and killing him in the process. As Vision's lifeless body turned grey, Thanos threw him aside and admired the Mind Stone in his hand.

Thanos gaining all the six Infinity Stones. As the might of all six stones were combined with the Gauntlet, Thanos harnessed infinite power and control over the universe. As this energy entered his body, Thanos roared out to the sky in pain. Thanos unleashing the Infinity Stones ' power. Moments after the Gauntlet's completion, Thor furiously charged out from the sky and struck Thanos with a large lightning bolt that had been fired from Stormbreaker.

In response to the attack, Thanos had furiously fired an energy beam with the combined strength of all six stones. However, Thor then launched Stormbreaker with all his might, which directly cut through the beam and straight towards Thanos himself, who could do nothing to stop it from coming at him. The axe ultimately struck Thanos in the chest, gravely wounding him as Thanos dropped down to his knees in agony while Thor had stepped over to him, basking in his victory over his enemy.

Thor then took hold of Thanos' head, and reminded him of his promise that he would kill Thanos for murdering Heimdall and Loki , and thousands of Asgardians on the Statesman , furiously forcing the axe blade deeper into Thanos' chest which caused him to roar in pain.

Thanos mocks Thor 's failed attempt to kill him. After a brief moment of discomfort from the terrible wound caused by the axe still embedded deep inside his chest, Thanos, while struggling to get all his words out, taunted Thor that he should have aimed the axe for his head.

Before his stunned opponent could react, Thanos simply lifted the Infinity Gauntlet into the air and snapped his fingers. The energy surged from the Gauntlet, which then caused the blinding light flooding the battlefield as Thanos briefly passed out. Thanos meets Gamora inside the Soulworld. To his surprise, Thanos then awoke within the Soulworld , without the wound in his chest or the Infinity Gauntlet. The void was empty, save for Thanos himself, and one building far in the distance.

The building resembled the same archway on Zen-Whoberi where Thanos found the young Gamora waiting for him. Thanos grievously told her that he had finally completed his mission. As Gamora had asked what it cost him, Thanos became solemn and simply replied, "Everything.

Regaining normal consciousness, Thanos returned into his body back in Wakanda. Upon seeing all the damage inflicted on the scorched Infinity Gauntlet as a result of finally being able to activate the Snap , Thor furiously questioned Thanos about the finger-snap, demanding to know what he did, but he offered no answers and instead used the opening to heal his injury, give his enemy a spiteful glare, and teleport away using the Space Stone.

As half of all life across the universe began to disintegrate as a result of his actions, Thanos reappeared on his Garden. Unable to hear all the screams of sadness and pain that were going out across the universe as trillions died in front of their loved ones, Thanos rested in a small hut with a view overlooking the alien countryside.

Having at long last accomplished his objective, Thanos peacefully gazed out to the rising sun and smiled in satisfaction. Three weeks after the incident, knowing that he would be tempted into a lust for power and acknowledging that the Avengers would likely target them, Thanos utilized the Infinity Stones a final time to reduce them to the atomic level with their own energies, essentially destroying them and eliminating any possibility from reversing the damage he did, which caused grievous wounds and scars on his body, mainly those parts nearest to the Infinity Gauntlet , which was completely ruined by the stones' destruction and permanently fused with his hand.

Despite being severely wounded, Thanos continued with his life in retirement on the Garden. Knowing he would die sooner or later, Thanos now only wanted to spend his remaining days in peace.

Two days after Thanos destroyed the Infinity Stones , the surviving Avengers saved Tony Stark and were able to locate his coordinates via the Benatar. While they were doing that, Thanos picked out a few fruits from his crops on his farmland to prepare for his stew. Collecting his harvest in a bag, the injured Thanos returned to his hut, where he began to prepare his stew. As he tended to his food with salt, Thanos walked out with his food to cook it on a campfire.

Thanos then looked up at the sky to see a bright light crash through his hut; he then blocked the energy beam with his worn-out Infinity Gauntlet. Captain Marvel flew toward Thanos and knocked him back, stalemating him for a second. Thanos being restrained by the Avengers. Captain Marvel subdued Thanos by wrapping herself against him, putting him in a headlock, and pushing his left arm with the Infinity Gauntlet away with her leg to prevent him from closing his fist and utilizing the Infinity Stones as she was not yet aware he destroyed them.

War Machine then broke inside the hut, and together restrained both of Thanos' arms. Thanos' arm is cut off by Thor 's weapon. Thor arrived at the hut by crashing through the back of it, and used Stormbreaker to sever Thanos' left arm, freeing the Infinity Gauntlet, which dropped to the ground as well as causing great pain to Thanos, who yelled out in a mixture of rage and agony. While suffering great pain, Captain America and Black Widow arrived to interrogate Thanos and collect all six Infinity Stones, as Thanos was helplessly retrained by the team.

Thanos admits on destroying the Stones. When the Avengers demanded to know where they were, Thanos noted that the universe required correction and after he accomplished his goal on that, the Stones served no purpose beyond temptation. Banner grew enraged from Thanos' reasoning and yelled at Thanos for murdering trillions of lives, shoving him onto the ground. Thanos explaining his actions with the Snap.

Recovering from the push by Banner, Thanos looked up and claimed that he should be grateful, but was brutally punched in the face. When Black Widow asked again where the Infinity Stones were, Thanos revealed that they were gone and reduced to atoms. After further questioning Thanos, he noted that by using the Stones to destroy themselves, he ensured that the Snap was irreversible, thereby making his victory everlasting.

Thanos praises Nebula for her trust in him. Thanos explained that the effort of him destroying the Infinity Stones had nearly killed him, but admitted that his work was done, and would always be. Thanos declared himself to be inevitable. A disbelieving Rhodes inquired the Avengers to tear the hut down to find the Stones, but Nebula confirmed that, while Thanos was many things, he wasn't a liar; implying that his statement of destroying the Stones had to be true.

Surprised and touched, Thanos confirmed this by thanking Nebula, finally admitting that perhaps he treated her too harshly. With this horrible yet genuine revelation revealed, Thor furiously swung his weapon at Thanos, decapitating him with one swift stroke and sending his head rolling across the floor of his hut as his body slumped to the ground, fittingly fulfilling Thanos' taunting 'suggestion' to him three weeks earlier to go for his head.

As the Avengers looked on in horror and contempt, Nebula crouched by her father's head and closed his eyes as a final deed for him as she silently cried for his passing. Despite Thanos' death, his actions left the Avengers in utter defeat once again as they sadly resigned to moving on with their lives on over the losses of their loved ones that he caused to them. After Thanos completed his goal in killing half of life in the universe, his actions became common knowledge, especially on Earth.

The global population was despaired by the loss of their respective loved ones, world governments that remained struggled to take a census, and pop-culture got frozen ever since. Hawkeye , under the belief that he could never regain his family, went as the Ronin to kill criminals that were lucky enough to survive the mass genocide from the Snap. Tony Stark , retiring from the Avengers , managed to find peace when he married Pepper Potts and had a child. Steve Rogers worked for a Brooklyn Support Group to help others recover from the catastrophe.

Thor became the miserable king of New Asgard , unable to cope with his failure. The remaining Avengers did their best to fight for Earth. During the course of the Snap , Scott Lang , also known as Ant-Man, was stranded in the Quantum Realm and was assumed to be a victim of Thanos' victory.

Five years later, in , Lang was freed by a rat , and soon learned about the state of depression Earth was in. Despite the passing of time, Lang only experienced five hours in the Quantum Realm due to its unpredictable nature. He then suggested this fact to the Avengers as a method of using time travel to reverse the Snap. They decided to pull a Time Heist , where they could travel to alternate years in the past to retrieve each of the Infinity Stones and use them to resurrect half of the universe's population.

When the Avengers retrieved the Infinity Stones and brought every soul that Thanos exterminated back, an alternate Thanos tried to correct his counterpart's mistake; he intended to destroy everything and make a new universe, only for Iron Man , at the cost of his own life, to use the stones to destroy him and his entire army. Afterward, everyone in the universe celebrated their victory knowing that Thanos was ultimately defeated for good.

Three weeks after being restored to life and still in grief over Thanos killing Vision , Wanda Maximoff learned that Vision's body had been taken to the custody of S. When Hayward refused, Maximoff decided to bid Vision a solemn farewell before leaving the S. Maximoff eventually drove to a plot of land that Vision purchased for her in Westview , New Jersey.

Overwhelmed with grief, Maximoff unknowingly unleashed her Chaos Magic , inadvertently creating a reality and a new Vision whom she could live a happy life with. Although Thanos' actions inflicted countless hardships, it also created unity. During the five-year span between the Snap and the Blip , nations of Earth started to cooperate and provide benefits to people who survived but were still affected by the Snap.

However, when half of the global population returned shortly after Bruce Banner performed the Blip, billions were displaced and conflicted by the changes, and the Earth started to revert to its pre-Snap state. By , numerous disgruntled survivors of the Snap led by Karli Morgenthau formed the Flag Smashers , an anti-nationalist group with the aspiration to return the planet to how it was before the Blip. Following the defeat of the Flag Smashers, which ended with Morgenthau's death at the hands of Sharon Carter , Sam Wilson , the new Captain America, confronted the Global Repatriation Council officials for their indifference to the Snap survivors by comparing their power to that of Thanos, assuring them that they had power, like that of an insane god as Thanos, of making things better for both the refugees and the former survivors of the Snap.

During the Time Heist , Iron Man accidentally supplied the Loki from an alternate timeline the Tesseract when an alternate Hulk accidentally knocked him away while trying to leave Stark Tower. This led Loki to teleport away with the Tesseract, creating a branched new reality and forcing the Minutemen of the Time Variance Authority to take him into custody to prevent conflicts with the timeline.

After an interrogation with Mobius M. Mobius , Loki temporarily escaped from the Minutemen and checked a series of clips using the TVA Holoprojector featuring what would have happened with him had he not escaped. The series finished with Loki 's death at the hands of Thanos aboard the Statesman. Realizing that Mobius was right and regretting his choices by that point, Loki turned over a new leaf to Mobius. Thanos was usually seen by everyone else as the ultimate personification of sadism, cruelty, megalomania, infinite destruction, death, power, and madness, with his search for the Infinity Stones seen by others as his plot to gain dominion over all the civilizations in the universe.

In reality, Thanos was a more complex and tortured soul given that his traumatic past and obsession with completing what he perceived as his destiny had led him to commit horrible actions all in the name of saving the universe even at a great personal sacrifice to himself.

He desired to use the Tesseract to look beyond the known worlds to find greater ones that it would unveil. He was also relentless, as seen by his gathering of children from across the galaxy to take as his own so he can raise them as assassins and aid him by tirelessly searching for the Infinity Stones. In addition to this, Thanos had extraordinary willpower, as evidenced by his absolute refusal to succumb to Mantis ' sleep-inducing touch despite its ability to usually make her victims docile almost instantly through but a simple touch, with her thus remarking that the Titan was "very strong" in his mental fortitude.

He was extremely intimidating and often unforgiving of failures. The Other once warned Loki that he would know a new kind of pain if he did not give them the Tesseract; this was proven true when he ruthlessly murdered Loki for his failure in retrieving the Tesseract for him and when he tried to kill Thanos.

Even though Ebony Maw had never failed Thanos, he still feared his master and father enough that he did not dare go to Titan without having fully taken the Time Stone from Doctor Strange.

Thanos threatened Ronan the Accuser that he would bathe the starways in his blood if he failed to deliver the Orb , visibly terrifying Ronan. He even forbade Gamora from rescuing Nebula when the latter fell into a trap whilst on a mission in the Cloud Tombs of Praxius. He had little to no regard for his subordinates, as seen by him showing absolutely no empathy when Ronan killed The Other. Regardless of his disregard for his minions, Thanos was shown to be an extremely skilled and charismatic leader, having been able to inspire fierce loyalty from the Black Order , as well as command the Chitauri and the Outriders , both being highly savage and powerful creatures, unchallenged.

He was extremely confident to the point of arrogance and appeared almost impossible to intimidate, smiling when The Other told him challenging the Avengers would be like courting Death. He was even unfazed at the idea of Ronan, who was strengthened by the Power Stone , coming after him despite knowing full well that Ronan was already very powerful even without the Stone and the fact that he was backed up by Nebula who had betrayed him, displaying only anger. He also smiled confidently after deciding to hunt for the Infinity Stones himself.

He was also manipulative and mistrustful, sending Ronan to retrieve the Orb for him and not telling him that it contained an Infinity Stone, while also sending Nebula and Gamora to monitor him. He is surprisingly patient, as he kept a low profile, lurking in the shadows and making others do his work for him even after centuries of failure. He did not make a move for the Infinity Stones directly nor did he openly show that he possessed an Infinity Stone until he was finally ready to collect the stones himself in rapid succession, presumably because he knew possessing one or more of the Infinity Stones would draw unwanted attention, prompting others to attack him and impede his preparations before he was finally ready.

Thanos' actions, despite their brutality, were so low that even Doctor Strange , who kept a watchlist of beings that may be a threat to Earth had never heard of Thanos, before Dr. Banner told him who the former was. Despite Thanos' ruthlessness during the early days of his conquest, he was not without compassion, especially when it came to children. When he met the young Gamora during his invasion of her planet , in stark contrast to the claims of Gamora that Thanos killed her parents in front of her, he gently kept her from being a part of the random genocide of her people by giving her the task of balancing a blade he gave her and when her attention turned to her people's screaming, he gently reminded her to remain focused on her task.

However, unlike the genuine love and care he showed towards Gamora, Thanos was ruthlessly strict and feared by the rest of his children, having been the one who turned Nebula into a cyborg, and Ebony Maw fearing his judgment should he fail. When he finally captured Gamora, Thanos treated her more like a guest than a prisoner. He gave her food and remained patient and appealing despite Gamora's anger, and rather than torturing her for the location of the Soul Stone, he instead had Nebula tortured to make Gamora tell him.

He took the lead when they ventured to the Soul Stone 's shrine and when they encountered the Red Skull , not knowing if he was friend or foe, he made a gesture telling her to stay back, shielding her with his own body. He was utterly heartbroken when it was revealed to him that he had to kill Gamora to gain the power of the Soul Stone, to the point where he shed tears and sincerely apologized, his grief and pain being sensed by Mantis despite still going through with it as he believed it was for the greater good.

When Gamora, upon seeing his victory from the future Nebula's memories, asked on what did he do to the Avengers, rather than suspecting or reprimanding her for not praising and relishing his victory, Thanos merely told her the truth and affectionately cradled his favored daughter's chin as he proudly proclaimed his victory. Even with all his strictness towards Nebula, Thanos showed that he did hold affection towards her, as when Nebula swore to make him proud, Thanos was visibly pleased and encouraged her to do so.

Although his lack of hesitation in torturing her to make Gamora confess the location of the Soul Stone could be another act of favoritism, Thanos did not actually kill her and in the final moments of his life, following Nebula defending his honor, Thanos genuinely thanked her and regretfully acknowledged that he'd been too harsh on her.

When his past self saw this recording, he took those words to heart and decided to treat Nebula better such as breaking the chain Ebony Maw had wrapped around Nebula's neck and cradled her chin in his hands affectionately, believing her loyalty and giving her the chance to prove it by bringing him to the future, even though Nebula could have been freed of him in the future had she decided to betray him.

He also trusted her to retrieve the stones herself and seemed very concerned when she wasn't answering her comm. When he learned from Doctor Strange that Ebony Maw was dead, he stated that the quest for the Infinity Stones "extracts a heavy toll" and with the loss of all his children and his followers, he mournfully acknowledged to Gamora's spirit he lost everything by fulfilling his goal.

His love for his children was particularly returned by his Black Order children and even Gamora and Nebula did reciprocate his love to an extent, with Gamora breaking into tears once she'd thought she'd killed him and Nebula silently crying for Thanos once Thor had killed him, even closing his eyes so he could rest in peace. Thanos loved his race unconditionally and desperately sought to save them, going as far as to propose wiping out half of his kind so the other half may survive.

His plan for saving his homeworld was rejected, leading to the fall of his race. This incident has burdened Thanos with immense regrets and remorse as he confessed to Gamora that he had ignored the inevitable extinction of his people once when he could have saved them by being more forceful and resolved in carrying out the genocide against his people's wishes.

As a result, Thanos became more determined in exterminating half of the population of every planet to save these civilizations from the same overpopulation tragedy on Titan. This is why Thanos truly believes his cause for killing off half of everyone on all planets to be a righteous cause, seeing himself as a righteous soul who is doing what is necessary to save all the civilizations of the universe.

As such, he stated that the Zehoberei did not suffer from environmental hazards, global hunger, or any other form of violence anymore, due to him killing off half of their population. Regardless of his campaign to murder trillions, Thanos' viewpoint of killing them in an admittedly painless and quick manner of disintegration was, according to him, mercy compared to all of life suffering the same fate of starvation that his people endured.

Not only that, but he did make an effort to keep the casualty count to an absolute minimum during his quest for the Infinity Stones and let the Snap handle killing half of all sentient life. Though he sought the Infinity Stones, the most powerful artifacts in the universe, Thanos did not do this for selfish reasons, only seeing the Stones as a means to facilitate his goal of balancing the universe, even quick to destroy the stones to avoid being tempted by their power.

He reserved special respect and even some empathy for those who displayed signs of great selflessness and bravery even if they were his enemies, as shown by how he praised Iron Man for bravely confronting him and wished the people of Earth would remember his heroism, complimented Star-Lord for being willing to kill Gamora, even stating that he "liked him" for his willingness to sacrifice his love for the universe, and briefly comforted Scarlet Witch after she destroyed Vision and the Mind Stone despite how crucial the last Infinity Stone was to his plans.

By contrast, Thanos disliked those who sought power for selfish gain, holding Ronan's grudge against the Xandarians in contempt, openly expressing disgust of Collector for his value of possessing over all else in his illusion, and showing outright disapproval that Thor wanted to gloat at him and didn't kill him instantly as he could have. Thanos had shown a dark sense of sarcastic humor and was able to remain calm and unfazed in situations that would frighten and shock most others, as he remained fully composed even after thwarting Loki's assassination and mocked him for choosing the word "undying.

He even remained unfazed after being badly injured by Thor and even mocked him for not striking him in the head. Thanos had also shown himself to be surprisingly honorable.

He did not go back on the end of the deal he made with others and would honor them even when angered, as he was still willing to destroy Xandar for Ronan should he retrieve the Orb even though he was angry at Ronan for coming to him empty-handed and alienating Gamora. He extends this even to his enemies, as he did not kill Iron Man after acquiring the Time Stone as he promised to Doctor Strange and instead simply left Titan.

Despite his manipulative nature, Thanos is also known as a man who never lies, a fact firmly confirmed by his own daughter Nebula and further shown by how Thanos showed genuine disappointment at Gamora's lie, stating that out of the many things he taught her to, lying was never one of them.

Although he may play favorites with his children based on their skill, he also proved to be fair when it came to judging their loyalty. When he saw what seemed like a betrayal in the Nebula, rather than immediately kill her, he brought her to his ship to thoroughly investigate her memory. Interestingly, despite being regarded by many as an incredibly cruel and cunning being, Thanos did not take his genocidal motives as a pretext to eliminate potential foes who could be able to exact revenge on him.

Indeed, he kept his intent to make his genocide as random and dispassionate as he intended, resulting in the survival of several members of the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy who had done everything they could to stop him. Although he did destroy the Infinity Stones to prevent any chances from undoing his actions, with his victory seemingly ultimately fully secured, despite knowing fully well his surviving enemies would come for him to get revenge, Thanos did not attempt to avert what he knew would be his death by their hands, not bothering to create defenses or even fighting back at all, and allowed himself to be at their mercy and accepted his fate with dignity.

It was only after another version of himself was confronted by these survivors did Thanos realize that there would always be people who would seek to undo his actions, prompting him to extend his plans from balancing the universe to simply erasing it all and creating a new one.

Between and , Thanos became more mellow. An example of this was when he referred to the Avengers as "unruly wretches" in , while in , he expressed his respect for Iron Man and did not refer to his enemies with derogatory terms, even referring to Scarlet Witch as "my child" when empathizing with her about losing a loved one.

Avengers: Infinity War got everyone talking about the galactic anti-superhero from Titan, Thanos. The Mad Titan took everybody in shock when he stumped the Avengers. It was the first time in MCU, when a villain had beaten the Earth's mightiest heroes, successfully collecting all the Infinity Stones and wiping half of the universe with a snap of his fingers.

The anti-superhero has appeared as many as five times in the films. As Josh Brolin who plays Thanos turns a year older today, here's a recap when Marvel introduced him in the films, take a look:.

Top review. Avengers infinity war is an emotional roller coaster. Using the strength of its powerful and interesting villain, the movie successfully brings together the past 10 years of Marvel movies into a largely effective cocktail of super-heroic dramatics.

Joe and Anthony Russo create a superhero movie that it's every bit the epic that it needs to be.

Other people in the story don't seem to remember any of their past lives, so his remembering some seems to be very special. Because of his past lives he is able to speak Shin Makoku's language, English and French. His parents are always busy with work so he is home alone a lot. He also spends a lot of time with Yuri's family. Since Yuri became the Maou and saved him from getting mugged they have become very close. He has become the captain, owner, and manager of Yuri's grass lot baseball team in the novels.

It was established in a drama CD that he Placed 2nd in the country on the trial entrance exam to the University of Tokyo. Also, even though he's still a high school student he's developing software and trading stocks.

In Murata Ken's last life before this one he was an adult film actress named Christine who lived in Hong Kong. In the novels, years ago, right after Soushu was sealed in the boxes they took two of them to earth and he was reincarnated there.

But in the anime it seems like he and Shinou were closer and around years ago he was reincarnated as Jeneus and made an organization in Shinou's memory called the white crows. He originally doubted Yuri, but Yuri eventually gaines his trust by entrusting him with Morgif's Jewel. He goes back a long way with Conrad: they've known each other since they were children. Halfbloods were - and are - looked down upon by both mazoku and humans because of the hatred between the races.

It can only be assumed that as relations between the species change, so will the treatment of halfbreeds. Yuri's efforts to unite humans and mazoku are one of the main reasons Josak supports Yuri. He is the first one to find out that Ken Murata is the person with the soul of the Great Sage, the Original King's trusted friend. He's a kind hearted man despite his huge appearance, and no matter how masculine he looks, he seems to enjoy cross-dressing as he frequently dresses as a woman in his work as a spy, and even dresses as a nurse to aid a human village in distress, complete with make-up.

He carries a dress around as a good-luck charm because dressing as a female has saved his life many times. The previous Maoh and mother of Wolfram, Conrad and Gwendal, each with different fathers. Having been replaced as the Maoh by Yuri, Cecilie takes advantage of her open schedule to hunt for men on her "free and easy quest for love. At one time, she wanted to marry him, [20] much to her brother's chagrin. Cecilie is also quite powerful, and has admirable skill with the whip.

When fighting, she has the uncanny ability to quickly dress in red leather and mask. This form and her skill tends to scare her enemies, and if they ever meet her the second time, they are usually unwilling to fight her again. Cecilie likes flowers and grows new types of them in the Blood Pledge Castle. She can take control of situations easily and effectively, however, and cares for her sons deeply, despite her cheerful personality. When Wolfram temporarily dies, she is devastated, and throughout the series she can be seen doing her best to protect her sons without directly interfering.

Cecilie goes by the name "Celi", which is pronounced " Cheri " in Japanese. Because of that some fans call her "Cheri" while others use "Celi" Pronounce as "Tseri"or"tselli' accurately in Romanization of Japanese. Both spellings are acceptable however, and thus depend on personal preference. Anissina is an inventor and is also Gwendal's childhood friend.

She often uses him to test out her inventions and it is for this reason that Gwendal seems to fear Anissina. She is also the one who taught Gwendal how to knit and later Greta too. If the men are away from the castle, it is usually Anissina who takes control.

When she does so, her inventions are usually seen everywhere. The names of her inventions often end in 'kun', and usually state what they are supposed to do.

Her inventions often requires the use of maryoku and they actually do more harm than good. An example of this is an invention where the user can communicate with animals, instead of keeping them under control Nicola's child summoned the dragon Pochi who wreaked part of the castle.

These inventions keep Greta entertained and she even thinks that Anissina is so cool. Aside from her inventions, she spends her time writing adventure story books involving herself as a super-heroine figure. These also usually keep Greta entertained, though Yuri and Wolfram often doubt whether they are even appropriate for children. She bears striking resemblance to real life French-Russian figure skater Marina Anissina.

An year old Genshi Miko or oracle with the form of a young girl. Ulrike comes from a long line of priestesses each chosen by the Original King to act as a channel between him and the people of Shin Makoku. She succeeds Ondine, whose final assignment after retirement was to get Yuri to form a pact with the elements. Ulrike is the one who, at the order of and with additional powers from the Original King, transports Yuri to and from his world to Shin Makoku.

Just like all other priestesses, she is not permitted to leave the Original King's castle. Yuri however, once tried to take her out to show her the beautiful world outside, but Wolfram barged in thinking he was flirting with her. At one point in the anime, her "childhood spirit" escaped from her body and went outside to play.

Her skills frightened the other children and caused chaos in the village. Ulrike chased after her younger form, and revealed her ability to take on the form of a young woman as opposed to her current child-like one to "comfort" her younger self. Adelbert is the first important character that Yuri meets in Shin Makoku. He believes that the Mazoku are simply pawns of the Original King. Though in the beginning he is considered an enemy, as the series progresses he begins to protect Yuri, though he still wants Yuri to show him what he is worth as the new king.

Julia was a kind woman who gave up her happiness for the sake of others. Gisela was one who remained by Julia's side in during the latter's final moments.

Julia's soul was given to Yuri when she accepted the fate given to her by the Original King. She was betrothed to Adelbert, was Wolfram's teacher, and was incredibly skilled at medical maryoku. She appears to have the same views on humans and Mazoku as Yuri does, wanting both races to be at peace with each other, which signifies their similarities. She was very close to Conrad, and she gave him her pendant, which Conrad then gave to Yuri.

She met her future self, Yuri, just before the Lutenburg Division left for the battlefield. Her chance meeting with Yuri prodded her that she is making the right choice accepting her fate to be the soul of the next Demon King and that Yuri will heal the world in the future. When Yuri's body is taken over by the Original King, whose soul is taken over by Soushu, she saves Yuri by letting him remember that he has courage to fight and change the world.

Years ago, Hube's bigotry and ambition led to many deaths forcing Gwendal, his cousin, to banish Hube from the Demon Kingdom to search for a lost artifact, the Great Demon Flute. Yuri struggles to learn details about Hube's past but no one wants to talk about the acts that were so terrible, even Conrad is content to watch him die. When Yuri eventually discovers the truth, he forgave Hube for unintentionally trying to kill him, and begs Gwendel not to kill Hube.

Gwendal eventually agrees not to, and Hube leaves for his own castle, but not before he tells Gwendal about a box he saw in Suberera. Hube swore loyalty to Yuri because Yuri chose spare his life despite Hube's crime. As such, Hube would go to extreme lengths to protect Yuri, such as leaving Nicola to fight against the possessed Original King.

Nicola first met Yuri and Gwendel at her "wedding" where she escaped after hearing Yuri's speech about gloves and mates. She was delighted to learn that her rescuers include her lover Hube's cousin.

She was the one to change Hube's views about humans. Nicola kept half of the Great Demon Flute which she gave to Yuri. Cecilie's older brother; he was the former regent of the former Maoh and was kicked out of the castle when Yuri arrived for trying to forcefully assert his influence on the kingdom. His own nephews do not trust him, as he was responsible for the last war against the humans. Stoffel tried to regain his authority by kidnapping Yuri and trying to convince him that his three nephews were just using him to control Shin Makoku.

This action almost resulted in a civil war with his nephews when they tried to rescue Yuri. Luckily, with Yosak's help Yuri escaped and prevented war from breaking out. Later, he tries to win back Yuri's trust by celebrating Yuri's visit, though the plan backfires when his sister returns instead. Raven, a childhood friend of Celi and Stoffel, advises Lord Stoffel and executes orders on the ex-Regent's behalf. Raven's strategies and ruthlessness endanger Yuri, however in his heart Raven is more loving than malicious.

Greta is the adopted human daughter of Yuri Shibuya and Wolfram von Bielefeld. Unknown to herself, she is a princess of the fallen kingdom of Zoracca. Her mother, the Queen of Zoracca, sent her to be raised by her uncle, the King of Svelera, before the kingdom fell. At first Greta tried to kill Yuri by posing as his illegitimate daughter [20] because her uncaring foster parents hated the Maoh and she believed she could earn their love by assassinating him. Greta met and befriended Hube while he was imprisoned in her adoptive parent's castle and later helped him to escape.

She is usually sweet and caring, but is strict and commanding when it comes to work. Her attitude toward work and her ability to order people around earned her the nickname "Sergeant".

A military physician, she was with Julia when she died on the battlefield. Dorcas often becomes emotional over good food. The young king of Small Shimaron who asks Yuri to call him Sara.

He is extremely beautiful and usually said to be someone who's beauty could rival that of Wolfram. At first glance seems soft-spoken and kind-hearted. He's already at adult age but still uses 'boku' which is usually used by young males when referring to themselves.

He can't remember much about his parents. He has the power of hypnosis, which he tried to use on Yuri, but with no effect. However the OVA storyline and the anime storyline are completely separate of each other and Yuuri meets Sara "for the first time" yet again during the third season under completely different circumstances, making it apparent the happenings in the OVA are completely irrelevant to that of the anime.

Sara is extremely beautiful and "gives wolfram a run for his money" as Yuri states in both the OVA and the Anime when first meeting him.

The two become friends despite misgivings Yuri's friends have concerning the human king. Yuri wants very badly to become very close friends with Sara. During Yuri's visit to Small Shimaron, in what appears to be a selfless and heroic act, Sara takes an arrow in Yuri's place. Murata and Conrad still remain suspicious of Saralegui's true motives.

It later becomes clear that Berias was the one who fired the arrow as part of a plan Sara concocted in order to gain Yuri's trust. As Lanzhil declares war on Shin Makoku, Sara finally reveals his true colors, using his power to manipulate Yuri into attacking a fleet of Big Cimaron battleships. His betrayal leaves Yuri completely shaken. However, Yuri soon decides that he will still trust Sara and he will continue trying to be good friends with him. At the end of the Series, Yuri's life is saved by Sara, making up for all the wrongs he had done towards Yuri and also gaining the gratefulness and trust of Yuri's fiends.

Lady Flynn Gilbit assumed the role of her husband Lord Norman Gilbit to protect her small country, Caloria, and its lands after his death. She chose to wear a mask and pretend to be her husband because Small Cimaron had conquered Caloria and, under their laws, women cannot inherit lands or titles, and adoptions are only valid before the death of the husband.

The original rulers of Caloria were the Wincott family, and because of Flynn's ancestors, the Wincott family was forcefully removed from rule. While Maxine appears to triumph, Yuri continually frustrates Maxine's ambitions. The Weller family have been close to the king of Big Cimaron for generations, but not necessarily by choice. It is known later on that an ancestor of the Weller family was entrusted with the key left arm for one of the Forbidden boxes.

Later in his travels, he met Celi, then the Maoh of Shin Makoku. Despite resistance from many corners, they married and had a son — Conrart. Celi herself admitted that their wedding was approved by the Original King.

Dan Hiri later traveled with Conrad and constantly trained him in fencing in preparation for the life ahead of him. Dan Hiri championed the rights of half-human, half-Mazoku and spent decades in making their lives better. Dan Hiri wanted proof of his life. Gwendal detested him, having the pride of a Mazoku, as Dan Hiri stated. However, after taking Gwendal along for a trip to settle their duel, Gwendal changes his opinions of Dan Hiri.

While appearing young to Gwendals' eyes, Dan Hiri was actually an old man by the time he and Gwendal fought off bandits to keep the Nameless Village safe. The power-hungry monarch of Big Cimaron knows no limitations to his ambitions of or the measures he will take to achieve them. However his lust for power, Belar's cowardice undermines his chances for success. Belar is possessed by the Soushu for a time.

He was forced to abdicate and was replaced by Lanzhil the Second. His soul watches over the lands of Shin Makoku , and priestess such as Ulrike and Ondine can communicate with him in a limited fashion, one they call "hearing His Majesty's voice". Murata also appears to be able to communicate with him, and is often seen scolding him for meddling in Shin Makoku's affairs.

However, while part of the Soushu was sealed in the boxes, a small part of the Soushu infected the Great One to the extent where his right arm seemed slightly decayed. This involved sealing the Soushu with a pure soul, and destroying it. The Original King commented that he was glad he chose Yuri as the Maoh. The Great One appears to be well alive in the OVAs, having seem to regain a physical body unlike his soul form at the end of Season 2.

Great One told Yuri that with Soushu destroyed, his aim of choosing Yuri as the Maoh has been reached, and Yuri no longer needed to be the Maoh. Since Yuri can achieve his goal very well, the Great One said that he will not hold back the decision of choosing Yuri as the Maoh and blesses him. The Great One has stated he will reduce anyone who opposes Yuri as the Maoh to ash. Soushu according to Ken Murata, is a formless being which has all negative emotions of humanity. When the people of Shin Makoku began to rebel against the Original King, Soushu further infected the Original King due to his frustration with his people.

This involved sealing Soushu with a pure soul, and destroying it. The pair decided the Great Sage would be reincarnated in order to find and assist the person who would finally be able to destroy Soushu completely. Soushu using the Original King's memories tells Yuri that the Original King and Great Sage intended that person to be Julia von Wincott, but she was, ironically, too pure for Soushu to possess.

With the help of Morgif in its original form, Yuri managed to destroy Soushu without harming the Original King. Soushu's shadow was a tall gigantic masked figure which possessed Belar for a short time. When Yuri breaks the control spell on Yozak, Aldebert and Keenan, [54] the shadow of the Soushu disappears, but not before it possessed Wolfram.

When the Soushu possessed Wolfram, Wolfram was forced to disrupt the sealing ceremony, and stay still while the key, Wolfram's heart, was ripped out by the form of the Original King. The Maoh of Earth. A businessman who owns several prosperous companies and is even called "the Maoh in the business world" and "The Mazoku who looks like a movie star" by Hamano Jennifer.

He met Yuri and Shori when they were children and saved them from some bullies. He was the last keeper of the box, before he entrusted it to Yuri, who took it back with him to Shin Makoku. Bob hates to have any semblance of home life in his office and so his workers have to wash the dishes in a bathtub and he also does not keep tissues in his office.

Associate of the Maoh of Earth and also a friend of Conrad. He lives on earth and transported the Great Sage's soul who ended up being Ken Murata to Japan at the same time Conrad transported Julia's. Later on he is seen working for the Maoh of Earth. Rodriguez is a pediatrician who loves Japanese anime and often travels to Akihabara to buy anime toys. He also took care of Lady Christine's spirit who was born into Ken Murata.

He became Murata's doctor as he was growing up. Yuri's older brother who is apparently a genius, likes to play dating simulators and is very protective of Yuri once described by Murata as having a "brother-complex" [56]. He is to become Bob's successor as the Maoh of Earth. While initially despising his parents for having a divorcement argument, he also resented the fact that Yuri will have to go to Shin Makoku eventually.

Bob explained to him it will happen in the future, and Shori was contented being with Yuri for the time being. It is seen that Shori communicates regularly with Bob, who he complains emphasizes his age more than anything else. Apparently his short term ambition is to become the Governor of Tokyo. Often carrying a cold attitude, he did not welcome having Wolfram and the others in his house. He seems especially distasteful to Conrad, and makes a point of demanding that Conrad returns his clothes to him properly cleaned since the two of them are about the same build and size, Jennifer usually lends Shori's clothing to Conrad.
