Baker in continued the success of Cal Poly and its learn-by-doing philosophy. For the Centennial celebrations, the first book-length history of Cal Poly was created. Copies are available in Special Collections and Archives and the main collections at the Kennedy Library.

Under direction of Bureau Chief Julian McPhee, the Polytechnic School becomes the state headquarters of Future Farmers of America and the centralized institution for training of vocational agricultural teachers. The mission of the school is changed to a two-year technical and vocational school.
McPhee is appointed president. Formerly The Polygram , it is now entitled El Mustang. The name of the institution is not changed until Naval Flight Preparatory School on the Cal Poly campus trains over 3, cadets; civilian enrollment falls to 80 students. Kellogg Foundation donates an acre horse ranch in Pomona to the college, which is located near the Voorhis campus.
By , the joint operation of the two campuses is known as the Kellogg-Voorhis Unit. Twenty-two others are injured, some gravely. Enrollment in San Luis Obispo reaches 7, students 2, women and 5, men.
