What will happen to dean in purgatory

Crowley and Castiel torture Eleanor Visyak and find a ritual to open a door to Purgatory. Castiel uses the ritual, which involves drawing a series of sigils in a mixture of the blood of a virgin and the blood of a Purgatory native. A spell is then recited on the night of the lunar eclipse: [9]. Sed nunc stamus ad limen hius But now we're standing on this threshold Ianuae magnae et demisse Of the Great door, and humbly Fideliter perhonorifice Faithfully, respectfully Paramus aperire eam Are preparing for its opening Creaturae terrificae quarum ungulae Terrible creature, whose claws Et dentes nunquam tetigerunt And teeth have never touched Carnem humanam aperit fauces Human flesh, is opening its jaws Eius ad mundum nostrum nunc Toward our world now Ianua magna Great door Aperta tandem!

Open at last! After Death agrees to engineer another lunar eclipse, Dean uses the same ritual and blood to reopen a portal to Purgatory, allowing all the monstrous souls inside Castiel to return - except those of the Leviathans. When Dick Roman is killed using the ritual from the Word of God , it opens a portal back to Purgatory which transports Dean and Castiel there.

Apparently in case humans ever accidentally got transported there, God put in a portal that humans could use to escape, but no other monster could use. Benny leads Dean and Castiel to the location of the portal which someone had told him and it opens in reaction to Dean's presence. Carrying Benny's soul in his arm, Dean is able to make it through just before it closes, allowing him to later resurrect the vampire, but Castiel purposely lets go, wanting to stay.

It is unclear if an angel would have made it through the portal anyway. Angels were able to travel into Purgatory if necessary to rescue beings as they did with Castiel, but this cost the lives of a number of angels. How they were able to enter Purgatory was not revealed. Reapers can travel back and forth from Purgatory at will and can take mortals with them.

Along with the portal to Earth, a hidden portal exists to Hell that acts as a "backdoor" into the realm. Rogue reapers use this to transport souls between Earth and Hell for a price and Sam uses it to rescue Bobby Singer. The archangel Michael was effortlessly able to open a twelve-hour portal to Purgatory with just a snap of his fingers even while restrained by the angel cuffs. After resurrecting Samuel Campbell , Crowley has him tracking down high-ranking creatures, especially Alphas , so that he can question them about the location of Purgatory.

Crowley says he is interested in Purgatory for "development purposes. Location, location, location. I'm a developer. Purgatory is vast, underutilized, and Hell adjacent, and I want it. Crowley tortures and interrogates the Alpha Shapeshifter for Purgatory's exact coordinates. The Alpha refuses to reveal its location, claiming ignorance, so Crowley angrily retaliates by decapitating it with a sword. Later in the episode, Crowley appears to be killed when Castiel burns a pile of old bones.

Death encourages Dean to continue his and Sam 's current investigation. He is most likely referring to their investigation into Crowley's pursuit of Purgatory. He also tells him that "it's about the souls. You throw away your life because you've come to assume that it will bounce right back into your lap. The human soul is not a rubber ball. It's vulnerable, impermanent, but stronger than you know and more valuable than you can imagine Right now you're digging at something.

The intrepid detective. I want you to keep digging, Dean It's about the souls. Purgatory is revealed not only to be the place where supernatural beings go after death, but also to be the place where the " Mother of All" is located.

A group of dragons are collecting virgins in an attempt to raise the Mother from Purgatory and allow her to walk the Earth once again. Sam and Dean discover an ancient manuscript made of human skin that Bobby ultimately deduces is a manual for accessing Purgatory and bringing forth Eve. Toward the end of the episode, this plan is carried out by the remaining dragons, who use the knowledge gained from the manuscript to open a door to Purgatory. They take one of their captives and throw her into the fiery chasm below.

This scene is memorable enough simply for being Sam's first death on the show, but when you combine it with the moment Dean tries to warn Sam that Jake is sneaking up behind him but can't , it's downright unforgettable. Sam arrived just in time to see Metatron stab Dean, and as Sam held his brother, Dean managed to get out some final words.

He told Sam, "I'm proud of us. No true Supernatural fan will forget how they felt when the Hellhounds came calling for Dean in season 3, just as they'll never forget the range of emotions experienced when Sam took hold of Lucifer and willingly jumped in the cage. Eve planned to turn all human souls into monsters in order to increase the power of her realm and to deplete Crowley of future resources. However, the struggle resulted in Eve's death. Castiel later successfully opened a portal to Purgatory and absorbed all the souls in there as well as the Leviathans. After his body began to deteriorate under the strain of the souls he had absorbed, he reopened the portal and returned all the souls to Purgatory, but some of the Leviathans clung onto Castiel's vessel and thus did not return to Purgatory.

Dean later teamed up with a vampire named Benny in order to find an " escape hatch " created by God in case humans ever got stuck in Purgatory. The two located Castiel and teamed up with him to escape, fighting off monsters and Leviathans that attacked them along the way.

Eventually, they reached the portal which opened when it sensed Dean's presence. Dean absorbed Benny's soul into his arm. However, while Dean made it through the portal before it closed, Castiel, who may not have been able to make it out anyway as he is not human or a former human, stayed behind as he wished to do penance.

Castiel was later rescued by an incursion of angels sent by Naomi which she said cost many angels their lives. Sam is able to travel to Hell and back through this door with Bobby Singer 's soul, but as Ajay had been killed by Crowley , was stranded in Purgatory. Dean asked Benny to go into Purgatory to save them and he agreed, allowing Dean to kill him. When Benny's soul arrived in Purgatory, he led Sam and Bobby to the portal but opted to remain behind in order to hold off a group of vampires.

Sam and Bobby escaped through the portal while Benny was seen being taken down by the three vampires. While under the influence of the Werther Box , Dean hallucinated he was back in Purgatory with Benny. After he killed the hallucinatory Benny, the hallucination dissipated. In , the archangel Michael reveals that the spell to lock away God requires a Leviathan Blossom , a flower that only grows in Purgatory.

As such, Michael opens a twelve-hour rift to Purgatory for Dean and Castiel. Visyak was a member of an unidentified monster race. She was accidentally released from Purgatory by H. Crowley described Purgatory to be adjacent to hell but implied it was quite difficult to access directly. He believed that the Alphas, and their mother Eve, knew how to locate it and therefore, create a passage to it.

The dragons also open up a passage from purgatory to bring Eve into the earth. Yes, as mentioned above, it is unlikely that God left that manual, but somehow, inexplicably, it existed. Then again, when Castiel was saved by the battalion of angels from heaven, they managed to enter purgatory somehow. But the question is, why did God feel the need to leave portals and passageways to and from this "hell-adjacent" - as Crowley puts it - place?

Did he think it would suddenly be necessary one day to let loose all the monsters in purgatory upon earth? It never quite makes sense how Castiel miraculously returns from purgatory in season 8, after letting Dean go on a guilt trip for months. It is understood that the angel Naomi sent in a garrison from heaven to get Cas out of purgatory. But how they were able to find a portal that allowed angels to pass through, when nobody in purgatory itself seemed to be aware of it, remained a mystery.

Fun as it is to watch, it is actually ridiculous how everybody makes a beeline for this universe, and that too, for some place in the United States, when they have to return from hell, heaven or purgatory. Given how many alternate realities the show has thrown at the audience over the years, from the bad place to the apocalypse world, one has to wonder why the portals from purgatory did not open up anywhere else. Surely, there should be some escape hatch that takes an entity, human or otherwise, to a different universe, where they get to meet a different version of their own selves?

Purgatory is full of blood, bones, unadulterated horror, and impending dread at every corner, where it would seem as if the very air stinks of death. However, in season 15, the archangel Michael tells Dean and Cas about a Leviathan blossom that grows in the soil after a Leviathan dies.

The blossom blooms only in purgatory and is one of the ingredients for a spell that might help seal God away. Now, perhaps one can imagine a flower associated with the death of a Leviathan to be not exactly the ordinary kind, requiring neither sun nor water, because otherwise, given how stifling the environment seems to be in this supernatural dimension, it seems unlikely that flora of any kind would sprout there.

After all, although purgatory is a forest, it's not exactly flourishing.
